All things needed, to be ready for a new puppy within the first 24 hours!
1. Dog Food - This is a need for any animal when you get them home. Typically, you want to stay with the food that your puppy comes home with but if you choose to feed something else you will need to mix the package of food I send with them, with an equal amount of new food and feed that mixture until it is gone. Then you can move to feeding them the new food alone. Here is a link to purchase the food your puppy is eating now.

This is the puppy food that I feed. It seems to be the most consistant formula for me.

2. Water and Water Dish - My puppies drink well water. If you are considering changing your puppy to city water or something other than well water, 1 container of distilled water will do. When it is half gone, fill it with the water that you will be using normally. Doing this gives them a chance to adjust to the new water gradually. This will help avoid an upset of the stomach.
If you decide to crate train and like to have the food and water dishes in the crate these are my favorite. You can clamp them in the crate, and the bowl will twist off to let you refill it.

3. Crate for training - I prefer crate training, as this gives my dog a “room” in the house that is theirs and only theirs. I would recommend a black wire crate that has 2 doors so you can fit anywhere in the house and you can move it with your furniture. I also think having a divider to make the kennel bigger as the puppy grows is the best way to crate train as well. Depending on the size of your puppy that you purchased I have 2 different suggestions on size.
A Cavapoo or Cavachon can get by with a 24 inch kennel. If you get a mini goldendoodle I would get a 36 inch kennel. I also recommend grabbing a couple of these pads as you have one in the crate and one in the wash! This one here would be the 24" kennel that I would recommend for the Cavapoo or Cavachon breed.

For the first couple weeks plan to a lot of laundry. I typically use old towels as bedding as I plan to wash them a lot during the potty-training stage. But feel free to order some personalized blankets for them to sleep on. They also make great photo ops for the new puppy.

How can I make my puppy more comfortable when I bring them home? - One suggestion I have would be a Snuggle Puppy! I have a whole blog page on this . Click to read.

2. Another thing I recommend for your new puppy is NuVet. I feed these to my mom dogs to help them with their immune system, skin, coat and digestion system during the phase of pre whelping through lactation. This will also help your pups as they transition to your house. My dog groomer friend swears by this product due to the number of customers that she has that uses it. She can tell a difference in the coat and skin of those on NuVet and those who are not on NuVet. www.nuvet.com/388626

Toys – Your puppy has been exposed to toys but may not play with them right away. Typically he/she will play with their littermate. You can purchase toys at your local pet store or you can find free toys around the house. Either way just be aware of the size of the toy. Something too big will be a waste of money because they will not play with it. Something too small can be a choking hazard. The object of the variety of toys is the variety of textures as they teethe. Here are link to some of my favorites.

"My dog is light colored and gets the tear stains on her/his eyes. What can you do to help with that?"
I use a product called Angel eyes and this seems to help my Cavachon. I have used both the powder and the chews, and she really has no preference to one or the other. I will add to her daily food, and after a month or so the tear stains are minimal. |
Now that I have the tear stains under control, what should I do about bath time? - I use a couple different shampoos for my puppy depending on why I am giving a bath. If they are stinky and need a bath then I will use Arm & Hammer. This has a deodorizer in it. If I am just giving them a bath because it has been a while and I want to give them a bath. Then I use Earth bath. Not only does it clean. If you have a white puppy and need to get them white rather than tan, I use the "white on white shampoo". I was always told the darker the shampoo the whiter the dog. And so far, this one hasn't failed me. This is actually used on show dogs. I use a couple different brushes and combs depending on the length of the fur and which area I am brushing. And did I mention the gloves. OMG it is like you are massaging the dog. So awesome.
